Lyon Release Full Statement After Ending Negotiations With Liverpool For Nabil Fekir -

The 24-year-old’s switch to Merseyside was expected in the coming days with contract talks ongoing between the English club and Lyon.

However, negotiations have now hit a snag and the prospect of another season in Ligue 1 beckons for the highly exciting attacking midfielder, whose 18 goals and eight assists propelled Bruno Genesio’s side to third place this term, two points behind runners-up Monaco.

The French outfit have not ruled out the possibility of Fekir moving to another European powerhouse though, provided that the price is right.

In a statement, Lyon said: “The three-way negotiations with Liverpool and Nabil were not successful and Olympique Lyonnais decided to end the negotiations at 20:00 (UTC).

“Although Liverpool have made Nabil’s transfer a priority, and subject to other bids from ambitious clubs consistent with the interests of Nabil and OL, Olympique Lyonnais is pleased to be able to count on the presence of its captain for the 2018/19 season, during which the club will play in the Champions League.”

Fekir’s dribbling ability and clinical edge has won him admirers across Europe, with Jurgen Klopp keen to add to his already impressive set of attacking options.

The board at Anfield will now have to look elsewhere for a creative spark that can ignite their title challenge.

Nevertheless, they have already made some impressive additions in time for next season, with Naby Keita and Fabinho joining the Reds from Leipzig and Monaco respectively.

However, further enforcements are welcomed following the loss of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to a serious knee injury in April and the release of Emre Can.
